A malfunctioning garage door is more than an inconvenience — it can be a safety hazard. Before calling for service, there are a few common problems you can troubleshoot yourself. Here's a guide to the issues we see most often.

Why won't my garage door open or close?

The most common causes are a tripped breaker or unplugged opener, an accidentally activated lock feature, dead remote batteries, or a disengaged trolley — with a broken spring as the serious possibility. Start with the basics: check that the opener is plugged in and the circuit breaker hasn't tripped. Next, check the wall-mounted control panel — many openers have a lock feature that can be accidentally activated. If using a remote, try replacing the batteries. If the motor runs but the door doesn't move, the disconnect cord may have been pulled, disengaging the trolley from the opener chain or belt.

Why does my garage door reverse before closing?

A door that reverses before closing almost always has misaligned, dirty, or blocked photo-eye safety sensors — or a close-force setting that needs adjustment. Modern garage doors have photo-eye safety sensors near the floor on each side of the opening. If these sensors are misaligned, dirty, or blocked, the door will reverse as a safety precaution. Clean the sensor lenses, check the alignment (the indicator lights should be solid, not blinking), and clear any obstructions. Also check the close-force setting on your opener — it may need adjustment.

Why is my garage door so noisy?

Squealing, grinding, or rattling noises usually point to one of a few causes:

  • Dry rollers: Nylon rollers are quieter than steel, but both need periodic lubrication
  • Loose hardware: Vibration loosens bolts and brackets over time — tighten them with a socket wrench
  • Worn hinges: Hinges with elongated holes need replacement
  • Opener chain: A loose chain slaps against the rail — adjust the tension per your owner's manual

Why does my garage door open unevenly or crooked?

An uneven door usually indicates a broken spring, a snapped cable, or an obstruction in the track. If one side lifts faster than the other, stop using the door immediately — operating it in this condition can cause the door to fall out of the tracks entirely. This repair requires a professional.

The Remote Works but the Wall Button Doesn't (or Vice Versa)

If the remote works but the wall button doesn't, the wall button wiring may be damaged or the button itself may need replacement. If the wall button works but the remote doesn't, reprogram the remote to the opener or replace its batteries. Consult your opener's manual for reprogramming instructions.

When to Call a Professional

Some garage door repairs are dangerous and should never be attempted without proper training and tools:

  • Broken torsion or extension springs
  • Snapped or frayed cables
  • Door off the tracks
  • Bent or damaged tracks
  • Opener motor or gear replacement
