Clopay garage doors: which series is right for your home?

Clopay is North America's largest residential garage door manufacturer, and its catalog runs from budget single-skin steel to five-layer composite doors with R-values up to 20.4. The construction tier matters far more than the marketing name: pick the layer count and insulation for how you use the garage, then pick the series for how your house looks.

Quick answer

Clopay is North America's largest residential garage door manufacturer, and its catalog runs from budget single-skin steel to five-layer composite doors with R-values up to 20.4. The construction tier matters far more than the marketing name: pick the layer count and insulation for how you use the garage, then pick the series for how your house looks.

  • Attached garage, or rooms above it? Go three-layer or better with Intellicore polyurethane — R-12.9 to R-18.4 versus roughly R-6.5 for polystyrene.
  • Detached, unheated garage? A one- or two-layer Classic Steel does the job for far less money.
  • The mid-tier three-layer steel doors (Classic Premium, Modern Steel, Bridgeport) are the value sweet spot for most Four-State Area homes.
  • Carriage-house looks come in three budgets: Gallery (grooved steel), Coachman (steel + composite overlays), and Canyon Ridge (full faux-wood composite).
  • Premium tiers carry a limited-lifetime paint warranty against rust-through; entry tiers get 10–15 years — ask which tier your quote actually is.

When you're replacing a door and every quote just says 'Clopay'

Two quotes can both say 'Clopay' and describe completely different doors. A one-layer pan door and a three-layer Intellicore door look similar on paper, but one is a single sheet of stamped steel and the other is a bonded steel-foam-steel sandwich that's roughly twice as dent-resistant and dramatically quieter. Before you compare prices, make the quotes comparable: ask for the series name, the layer count, and the R-value in writing. This guide gives you the map so you know exactly what each answer means.

When the garage is attached — or has bedrooms above it

The garage door is the biggest hole in your home's thermal envelope, and in an attached garage it's effectively an exterior wall of the rooms beside and above it. Clopay's Intellicore polyurethane is injected as expanding liquid foam that bonds to both steel skins, hitting R-12.9 in a 1-3/8-inch door and R-18.4 in a 2-inch door — versus about R-6.5 for cut-to-fit polystyrene board. In a Four-State winter, that difference is something you feel in the bonus room over the garage every single morning.

When curb appeal is the point of the project

A garage door can be up to a third of your home's street-facing façade, and remodeling-impact studies routinely rank door replacement among the highest-recouping exterior projects. That's the honest case for spending up on a Coachman or Canyon Ridge: you're not buying a fancier appliance, you're renovating the front of your house. Clopay's Color Blast program can also factory-finish most series in over 1,500 Sherwin-Williams colors if matching trim matters to you.

Classic Steel — the workhorse

Traditional raised-panel steel in one-, two-, or three-layer construction, from bare-bones uninsulated to R-18.4 Intellicore Premium. This is the right answer more often than salespeople admit: on a detached garage a one-layer Classic is honest value, and a three-layer Classic Premium gives an attached garage most of the thermal performance of the fancy series without the design premium. Tradeoff: it looks like what it is — a standard garage door.

Bridgeport & Modern Steel — clean-lined steel

Bridgeport stamps crisp, square shaker-style recessed panels that suit colonials and transitional homes; Modern Steel goes flush or subtly grooved for contemporary builds, with matte Lustra and wood-look Ultra-Grain Plank finishes. Both run the full one- to three-layer range up to R-18.4. Tradeoff: these are style plays on the same steel engineering as Classic — you're paying for the look, so make sure the construction tier keeps up.

Gallery, Grand Harbor & Coachman — carriage house on three budgets

Gallery gets the carriage-house feel with grooved steel and optional Ultra-Grain wood-look paint — no overlays, least cost. Grand Harbor adds composite overlays on a polystyrene-insulated steel base (about R-6.3). Coachman is the benchmark: four-layer construction with a steel base and thick composite overlays, available up to R-18.4, and it's what most people picture when they say 'farmhouse door' — white base, black hardware. Tradeoff: Grand Harbor's insulation is entry-tier, so on an attached garage the cheaper-looking Gallery in three-layer construction can actually outperform it thermally.

Canyon Ridge — the faux-wood flagship

Composite boards molded from real wood pieces over an Intellicore steel core. The five-layer version shows no exterior steel at all and reaches R-20.4 — the highest in the residential catalog; the four-layer version keeps the R-18.4 core with overlays on a wood-look painted base; the Elements line offers the overlay look on a polystyrene base (R-6.5) at a friendlier price. Tradeoff: five-layer doors are heavy and priced like the architectural statement they are — and they deserve a properly sized spring set and opener, which is an installation-quality question, not a catalog question.

Avante & Reserve Wood — the specialists

Avante is aluminum-and-glass full-view for modern architecture (and the VertiStack version stacks on the wall, freeing the ceiling for car lifts or storage). Reserve is genuine handcrafted wood for historic and custom homes. Tradeoff: Avante gives up insulation value for light, and real wood demands refinishing every three to five years — if you want wood looks without wood maintenance, that's exactly what Canyon Ridge exists for.

Key terms and context

Buying the series and ignoring the tier

The most common mistake we see on competing quotes: a beautiful series name attached to its cheapest construction tier. A polystyrene Coachman and an Intellicore Coachman look identical from the driveway and perform completely differently for the next twenty years. Always get the layer count and R-value in writing — 'it's insulated' is not a specification.

Skipping wind-load where it matters

Clopay's WindCode system (W1–W9) builds reinforcement into the door itself — struts, heavier hinges, anchored track — so there's nothing to set up before a storm. Most Four-State Area homes don't need coastal-grade ratings, but exposed ridgeline and open-field sites in our region take real straight-line wind. If your site is exposed, ask about reinforcement before the door is fabricated, not after the first derecho.

Letting the install undercut the warranty

Clopay's stronger warranties — limited-lifetime paint rust-through on premium tiers, ten years on section delamination — assume the door went in to factory spec with authorized parts. An off-spec install with improvised hardware gives any manufacturer grounds to argue a claim years later, when you can't prove what was done. This is the unglamorous reason dealer installation matters more than any brochure page.

Common questions

Is Clopay a good garage door brand?

Clopay is North America's largest residential garage door manufacturer, with one of the broadest catalogs in the industry and the only garage door line backed by the Good Housekeeping Seal. Like any big maker, the range runs good-better-best — a one-layer Clopay is a budget door and a five-layer Canyon Ridge is a premium one. The brand is sound; the tier you pick is what determines what you actually get.

What R-value garage door do I need in WV, MD, VA, or PA?

For an attached garage in our freeze-thaw climate, aim for a three-layer door with Intellicore polyurethane — R-12.9 to R-18.4 depending on thickness. If the garage is detached and unheated, insulation buys you little, and an honest company will tell you a one- or two-layer door is fine there.

What's the difference between Intellicore and polystyrene insulation?

Polystyrene is rigid foam board cut to fit inside the panel — cost-effective, roughly R-6.3 to R-6.5. Intellicore is Clopay's injected polyurethane that expands to fill the panel and bonds to both steel skins, reaching R-18.4 in a 2-inch door. The bonding also makes the panel stiffer, quieter, and roughly twice as dent-resistant — it's a structural upgrade, not just a thermal one.

Which Clopay series looks right on my style of house?

Rough map: colonials and traditional homes suit Bridgeport's shaker panels or Coachman carriage styles; craftsman bungalows pair with Canyon Ridge's wood-look overlays; modern farmhouses love a white Coachman or Gallery with black hardware; contemporary builds call for Modern Steel or the glass Avante. We bring samples to the estimate, and our on-your-home visualizer lets you preview doors on a photo of your own house first — right on this site.

How long is the warranty on a Clopay door?

It scales with the tier. Premium three-, four-, and five-layer doors carry a limited-lifetime paint warranty against rust-through for the original single-family owner, roughly 10 years on section delamination, and 3–5 years on hardware and springs. Entry tiers run about 10–15 years on paint and shorter terms elsewhere. Custom Color Blast finishes are 5 years on any series, and warranties assume factory-spec installation.

Do I have to buy a Clopay door through a dealer?

Clopay doesn't sell direct to homeowners — doors are sold and installed through its authorized dealer network. That's genuinely to your benefit on a product that lives under spring tension: the dealer handles measurement, wind-load requirements, spring sizing, and warranty claims. You can verify any dealer, including us, on Clopay's own dealer locator in about a minute.
